Mattel Ghostbusters

What is the similarity between Singapore/USA and Hot Toys/Mattel 12 inch figures?
They are miles apart!
Ok, I know that was a joke served ice cold but I could not resist it.
Mattel is currently working the Ghostbustersline, producing 12 inch and 6 inch figures. However they were sold through Mattycollector.com. Not as popular as the Master of the Universe line where the figures got sold out immediately when they went on sale but wait a more few weeks and they will be sold out too.
I managed to get Ray Stantz, Egon Spengler and Peter Venkman but missed out on Winston Zeddemore.
In this post, I am going to review all 3 Ghostbusters at 1 go because the quality of sculpt and accessories are similar.
You can read my other Ghostbusters review here!

The packaging is pretty simple in design and shows the figure well. I love the idea of putting the accessories in a "locker" box slotted at the side of the box.
Did you know if you get all four of the 12 inch Ghostbusters, the four packages actually create a mural when set next to each other and viewed from the side, bookshelf style. Thanks to mwctoys.com...now I know.
However, I already threw away the packaging...sigh.

The packaging is not collector friendly, once you decide to take them out of packaging, there is no turning back. You basically have to destroy the packaging to get to the figures. It is okay for me because I don't usually keep the packaging anyway.

Being so used to the standard of Hot Toys, Sidehow, DID etc, I am disappointed with the head sculpts. Mattel went with the cartoony style which I am totally not thrilled.
If you look hard enough, you can see the resemblances of the actors playing the Ghostbusters...but only just.
I think of all the 12 inch Ghostbusters, Winston's head sculpt looks the best and that was the one I missed out.
The painting is pretty average but they did not paint the lips, making them the same color as the skin.

Thankfully, the negatives stop at the head. The accessories are actually pretty well done. The main accessories across all 3 figures are the proton pack and portable trap. These are very well made and have a lot of details on them. The proton pack comes with all the wires and little buttons. It even has a light up feature with 4 small LED lights that move in a circular fashion. Pressing the button at the bottom of the pack activates the lights but there is no off button. You would have to wait a few seconds for it to go off on its own. It is one damn cool accessory.
The portable trap is not far off with both lids able to open with a push of a red button. It is attached to a foot paddle.
The other accessories are pretty normal like a pair of hands and walkie talkie.
However, each character does get a unique accessory.
Ray Stantz his own goggles, Egon Spengler his PK meter and Peter Venkman a pair of folded gloves for his belt and another extra pair of hands.

Overall these figures are pretty cool to have. What attracted me to the figures were the proton packs, however I realised that all I needed was to buy 1 figure as all 3 came with exactly the same pack!
Well...come to think of, it is also quite cool to display all 3 of them together. It is also the idea of having the Ghostbusters figures that pushes me to purchase them even though the standard is not there.
Nice to have I guess.
